Network Rail and the Strategic Rail Authority announced that work has started on upgrading the facilities for passengers at several stations in the Merseyside area.  These include a brand new waiting room and customer information system.  The new facilities will be completed by Spring 2004.   These improvements to Aintree, Green Lane, Hooton, Birkenhead Central, Freshfield, Old Roan, Hillside and Formby are part of a national project known as the Modern Facilities at Stations scheme. The project will see facilities modernised at 68 stations across the country. The improvements will vary from station to station, but include new waiting rooms, toilets, shelters, CCTV and customer information systems. The project has been specified and funded by the Strategic Rail Authority and is being delivered by Network Rail.   Tim Clarke, Regional Director said, “Network Rail is committed to providing safe, reliable and efficient railway infrastructure.  Stations are the gateway to travel by rail and form a vital part of the journey experience for passengers.  Comfortable stations with modern facilities are an important component in our continued programme to re-build the railway.”
