STATION REVAMP GETS THE GO-AHEAD

Region & Route:

The transformation of Cheadle Hulme station has got the go-ahead, following talks between Network Rail and Stockport Borough Council.  Network Rail will now invite its contractors to tender for the work with a view to starting on site in late autumn.

Welcoming the decision, Network Rail route director Jo Kaye said: “This is fantastic news for everyone who uses the station but more importantly for those passengers that are unable to travel by train because they cannot manage the stairs for whatever reason.

“By this time next year they will have a whole new range of journey opportunities available to them.”

Passengers will have direct access from the station car park onto platform four, and to lifts and an over-bridge linking all platforms.

A lift tower will be built on platform four and there will be a small flight of steps leading up from the car park entrance/exit directly onto the platform, but disabled people and those with luggage or children in buggies can take the lift to the platform.

The lift will then continue to an upper level to an over-bridge across all four railway tracks, with lifts to/from the remaining platforms. There will also be staircases to the over-bridge from all platforms.

The project is expected to be completed in summer 2011.

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
