Shuttle bus service extended for Liverpool residents during bridge refurbishment work
- Region & Route:
- North West & Central
A shuttle bus service in the Garston area of Liverpool will be extended this week after work started to rebuild Church Road railway bridge.
The free bus will allow residents to continue to access shops and local amenities while the essential bridge work takes place.
To complete the Great North Rail Project work safely, Church Road has been closed at the railway bridge until Sunday 30 June.
The shuttle bus travels on the diversion route from one side of the bridge to the other via Banks Road and Speke Road.
Joel Farrell, scheme project manager for Network Rail, said: “Work to reconstruct Church Road bridge is now underway and is vital to ensure it will remain safe and viable for years to come.
“To deliver our work safely, we have to close the road beneath the bridge while the existing structure is dismantled and replaced.
“We have listened to residents in Garston and from Wednesday, we will introduce an extended shuttle bus timetable to help keep people moving. I’d like to thank the local community for their patience.”
Each shuttle bus has a total capacity of 22 (15 seated and 7 standing) and is also accessible for wheelchair users and those with prams.
There is currently a shuttle bus operating between 7am and 8pm.
From Wednesday 10 April, shuttle buses will be more frequent and running hours will be extended to operate between 6am and 10pm:
- Between 6am – 7am buses will run every 30 minutes
- Between 7am – 8pm buses will run every 15 minutes
- Between 8pm – 10pm buses will run every 30 minutes
Garston Shuttle Bus will travel from Liverpool South Parkway (Stand 4) via Woolton Road, Church Road, Speke Road, Banks Road, Windfield Road, York Street, Window Lane, Banks Road, Speke Road, Church Road, Woolton Road to Liverpool South Parkway.

About Network Rail
We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.
Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
