SHIPLEY STATION ACCESS IMPROVEMENTS

Region & Route:
Shipley station is set to be more accessible to all those who use it. Extensive work commissioned by Network Rail at the station start this month (November). This five-month programme will provide step-free access from the station entrance to and between platforms. On platforms three and four, which serve trains to Ilkley, Bradford and Leeds, a new footbridge is being constructed along with two lifts and stairs. Two new lifts will also be installed on the existing footbridge on platforms one and two, used by services between Skipton and Leeds. All the new lifts will be fully Disability Discrimination Act compliant and fitted with closed-circuit television. Network Rail is managing and delivering the improvements, which are being funded by the Department for Transport’s (DfT) "Access for All" fund. Network Rail route director, Dyan Crowther said: “When completed in spring 2008, these essential new facilities will make station and platform access much easier for all passengers, including people with disabilities, those carrying heavy luggage and parents with prams." Malcolm Brown, area director, Northern Rail, said: "With over 300 services calling at Shipley every day over one million customers use the station facilities every year. These improvements will not only benefit existing customers but also help open up the rail network by making it more accessible for new passengers.”

Notes to editors

“Access for All” is a £370m ring-fenced fund for station accessibility improvements under the Government’s ten-year “Railways for All” strategy. Station selection and prioritisation is made by the DfT who, to date, have chosen 92 stations in England and Wales to have step-free access improvements.

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
