SANDHILLS STATION REMAINS CLOSED

Region & Route:

Network Rail has completed all the work that it was due to finish at this stage in the station reconstruction programme.

However, the station operator Merseyrail has decided to keep the station closed in the best interests of the passenger, until early July, when it will partially open in time for the Tall Ships event.

The decision, which was taken with the support of Merseytravel, is because:

  • the station is in an exposed and elevated position so until the new facilities are completed, there is no protection for passengers from inclement weather
  • there is an alternative interchange at Moorfields that is working well and very few passengers are making use of the alternative road transport provided at Sandhills
  • it was felt that although the work areas are fenced off, the image presented contrasts sharply with the level of facilities and appearance that will be in place when work is completed

Network Rail’s Area Manager Merseyside Simon Whitehorn said: “In the meantime, we will be working closely with our client Merseytravel and station operator Merseyrail to make sure the rest of the programme goes smoothly.

“We will also be reviewing with our contractors as well as talking to Merseyrail to see if the extended closure means the work programme can be brought forward and the station fully opened earlier, possibly in the autumn.”

At present, work is due to continue until early December 08 when the full station re-construction programme will be completed.

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
