Safety improvements at South Milford station
- Region & Route:
Work to improve passenger safety at South Milford Station begins next week (23 September)
Network Rail is removing the footpath level crossing which links the two platforms after reports of near misses between pedestrians and trains.
Phil Verster, Route Managing Director of Network Rail, said: “We regularly receive reports of pedestrians crossing from the car park to the Leeds platform when the warning lights are on red and so putting themselves in danger from trains travelling on the other line to Selby. This is a 90mph line and we cannot wait for an accident before taking action.
“From Monday 29 September the only access between platforms will be along ramps at the end of the platforms and through the existing subway.”
Richard Allan, Area Director for Northern Rail, said: “Customer safety at stations is always a priority for us and keeping customers safe is exactly why we are supporting Network Rail’s Level Crossing Safety Strategy. One near miss at South Milford is one too many. Signage at the station will clearly mark out the new access arrangements using the subway.”

About Network Rail
We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.
Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
