SAFETY FIRST AT LEVEL CROSSINGS ON THE SOUTHPORT LINE

Region & Route:
A level crossing near Burscough is being upgraded at a cost of £1 million in a scheme that aims to help pedestrians and motorists using this busy thoroughfare. Dean Lane level crossing, which is on the Southport to Wigan line, is being renewed.  All work should be complete by Monday, 21 November 2005. Gary Openshaw, General Manager (Preston) said: “This scheme will enhance safety for both pedestrians and motorists using the crossing. Level crossings always safe if used correctly and pedestrians and motorists must follow the roadside instructions when using level crossings to ensure their safety.” The renewal of Dean Lane crossing will have a knock-on affect on three other crossings along the line; Hoscar, Four Lane Ends and Shaws level crossings will continue to be in use, but attendants will be on site supervising movements over these crossing to ensure the safety of motorists and pedestrians. Mr Openshaw added: “While the attendants carry out these duties we would urge road users to obey their instructions and be patient while waiting to cross the railway.”

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
