SAFE AND SECURE AT LEEDS CITY STATION

Region & Route:
The 85,000 passengers using Leeds City Station every day can do so safe in the knowledge that it has retained its ‘secure station’ status.  The station receives its award under the Secure Stations Scheme, managed by the Department for Transport (DfT) in partnership with the British Transport Police (BTP). Dyan Crowther, Route Director, Network Rail said: “This ‘Secure Stations’ award reinforces our assurance to staff and passengers that their safety and security are top priorities.” Security features at the station include 24 hour CCTV cameras, dedicated security staff, customer information and help points. To retain ‘secure station’ status, Network Rail had to demonstrate it was effectively managing crime problems over the 12 months prior to applying for the award.  The design of the station had to comply with standards that helped to prevent and reduce crime, such as lighting, help points and easy access to telephones and alarms, all of which provide reassurance to passengers and staff alike. The management of the station must allow staff to take steps to prevent crime, respond to incidents and communicate effectively with passengers.  An independent survey of passengers has to show that they feel safe and secure when using the station. The ‘Secure Station’ award comes shortly before the opening of the new Customer Information Point on the north concourse.

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
