RUNNING ON IMPROVED LINES AT SCARBOROUGH

Region & Route:

Rail passengers in Scarborough are travelling on a railway fit for the future after Network Rail completed significant investment in the line.

Signals have been replaced with modern technology and the track layout improved to allow for greater flexibility and improved performance.

Warrick Dent, area general manager for Network Rail, said: “We have completed significant investment – not only at Scarborough itself but also at several sites further along the line. This modernisation will allow us to deliver the excellent service people rightly demand from the railway for many years to come.”

Notes to editors

Between January and October 2010 the signalling works, which are worth around £20m, were carried out overnight when trains do not run to minimise impact upon the travelling public.

The listed signalling gantry at Falsgrave has been removed and will be re-installed at the North Yorkshire Moors Railway following refurbishment. The signal box at Falsgrave has been closed and a new user for it is being actively sought.

The signalling work has transferred control of the system fully transferred to Seamer signalling box (previously split between Falsgrave and Seamer) and a new track layout has been installed to improve timetable flexibility and give better access for refuelling steam trains

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
