Rochdale Road bridge in Manchester reopens early
- Region & Route:
Rochdale Road bridge in Manchester has reopened to traffic ahead of its orginal January 2015 date.
The bridge was rebuilt as part of Network Rail’s £1bn+ investment in the north west to provide a better, more reliable railway.
It was required to accommodate overhead electrical lines underneath which will be installed as part of the electrification of the railway between Manchester and Stalybridge.
Ian Joslin, area director for Network Rail, said: “The early opening of the bridge is good news for the surrounding area and is a significant achievement by the team delivering the work. We appreciate the impact road closures have and always keep them as short as possible.
“As well as delivering significant benefits to passengers, an electrified railway is also beneficial to those who live nearby as it will mean quieter trains which produce fewer emissions will travel through the area. I thank local people for their patience while this essential work was carried out.”
Electrification will help to provide a cleaner, faster and more reliable railway for passengers as well as contributing to additional capacity across the north of England.

About Network Rail
We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.
Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
