Residents in Lancashire invited to find out more about railway work

Region & Route:
| North West & Central

Network Rail is inviting residents in Lancashire to find out more about work taking place on the railway line between Preston and Blackpool.

Piling - the process of installing foundations for the masts and gantries that will carry electrified wires along the railway – has begun between Preston and Blackpool North stations, and will continue for several months.

Piling is a noisy activity as it involves driving steel piles deep into the ground to provide a secure base for the gantries. There can also be noise from vehicle movements as safety rules mean that a horn must be sounded when moving vehicles connected to the work.

Although noise levels are dependent on the distance of homes from the railway and piling locations – which are installed every 50 to 60 metres – local residents are being advised to expect some disturbance whilst this work takes place. The majority of piling will take place overnight, as this is the time when it causes the least impact on passenger services.

Network Rail is inviting residents wishing to find out more about the work to attend one of its upcoming information events. Network Rail staff will be available to answer any questions which residents may have.

The public information events will take place on the following days:

  • Monday 22 May from 16.00 to 19.00 at Kirkham Community Centre, Mill Street, PR4 2AN
  • Tuesday 30 May from 16.00 to 19.00 at Poulton Civic Centre, Breck Road, FY6 7PU
  • Monday 19 June from 16.00 to 19.00 at Ashton Methodist Church, Wellington Road, Preston, PR2 1BU
  • Tuesday 27 June from 14.00 to 18.00 at Blackpool North station, Talbot Road, Blackpool, FY1 2AB

If you can’t make an event but wish to find out more about the work, as well as keep up to date with its progress, please visit the Network Rail website at www.networkrail.co.uk/blackpool

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
