Region’s Graduates on the right track with Network Rail

Across the country Network Rail has boosted the number on its rolling graduate scheme. 40 new general management posts have been created with 10 on the London North Eastern (LNE) Route based in York. In this growing industry places have been created in finance, information management, property, strategic planning, contracts and procurement, project management and engineering at locations between King Cross and Scottish boarders.

The company is also highlighting the opportunities for mechanical and electrical engineering graduates, working with Network Rail’s 2,000-strong fleet of on-track vehicles and plant. The business is continually looking at how to improve the design and installation of technology to enhance the railways and improve performance and safety.

LNE Route Managing Director Phil Verster explained: “With a fast-growing sector and a massive programme of investment Network Rail needs bright, commercially-focused people to help improve our railway and deliver an excellent service for passengers.

“Ever-closer working with train and freight operators also means we can offer a broader, more integrated graduate scheme. Some excellent graduates have joined us who have a host of opportunities and exciting career challenges ahead.”

Alex Paddon said: “I wanted to join the graduate scheme because I was looking for a career in management and have always had an interest in the railways. I have always used trains and I wanted to be a part of shaping the railways in years to come because they are important to lots of people. The Network Rail scheme offers a lot of potential to do a wide range of roles. It drew my interest because I can shape my own career to fit my strengths and what I enjoy.

“I am currently on my placement with maintenance teams and I have really enjoyed getting down onto the track with trains around me. It is sometimes a very intense environment, especially working safely with trains running at 125mph, but it has opened my eyes to how things work on the frontline, which is a great experience to have.”

Leeds graduate, Oliver Tenwick added: “The Network Rail scheme was attractive because of how varied, interesting and flexible it is – and what better way to gain an idea of the business world than to do a broad scheme in such a diverse company such as Network Rail. I have been all over the place experiencing lots of the frontline operations. I have learnt so much in such a short space of time due to the varied and hands on nature of the work.”

Nottingham graduate Evan Taylor said “I joined the scheme because I wanted the chance to develop my leadership, not only in the office, but also out on the ground. With the wide range of jobs I could get involved in; it seemed like the right job for me.

“So far, the best part of the scheme has been how welcoming people have been and their willingness to help me learn. I have really enjoyed the ability see how important decisions are made and then implemented out on the railways; it is really gratifying to see results which improve safety and performance.”

Matthew Foote from York said: “I was attracted to the scheme by the opportunity to gain an in depth understanding of all aspects of the company before deciding which role/career path my strengths would be best suited. Being able to get my hands dirty on the maintenance placement in Sheffield has been my particular highlight. I really enjoy the hands on learning approach.”
