Railway volunteers help Friends of Guide Bridge Memorial Garden

Volunteers from Network Rail, Northern and Carillion joined the Friends of Guide Bridge this week to help lay the foundations for their Memorial Garden project.

The project aims to revive an overgrown plot of land near Guide Bridge station in Audenshaw by creating three wild flower garden areas and two planting troughs to grow fruit and vegetables.

 

The first steps were taken on Wednesday (25 May) as over 20 volunteers worked to clear the site, providing a blank canvas for the Friends of Guide Bridge to build upon.

 

Andrew Griffin from Network Rail, and on behalf of Northern and Carillion, said: “It was really rewarding to work together to support the Friends of Guide Bridge with their Memorial Garden project. We have helped the group move one step closer to completing the transformation of this neglected piece of land which will significantly improve the local environment. Once finished, the Friends of Guide Bridge will engage with local schools so that pupils can learn about nature and wildlife and how to grow flowers, fruit and vegetables.”

 

Andy Kettle from the Friends of Guide Bridge, said: “It was a joy to have the opportunity to work with the volunteers from Network Rail, Northern and Carillion. A huge transformation was made to the land and this now allows the Guide Bridge Station volunteers to progress on to the next stage of constructing the flower and vegetable troughs.”
