Swapping rail tracks for racing tracks, Network Rail staff have raised over £3000 for The Railway Children’s Charity, by holding the Great Railway Grand Prix. Over 70 staff in 15 teams took part in the Grand Prix at Birmingham Wheels Karting Centre. The teams from the London North Western route battled it out in qualifying races before tackling the gruelling two-hour main Grand Prix. After the race organisers Paul Sutherland, Operations Safety Manager and Darren Cottrell, Signalling Risk Control Assistant presented prizes to the winning team. Awards were also presented for the most dramatic spin and to the team who raised the most sponsorship. Steve Derrick, Area General Manager and budding Michael Schumacher, said: “This was a great opportunity to raise money for a very worthy cause, while having some fun at the same time. We are so pleased with our total of over £3000. “The Railway Children’s Charity helps runaway and abandoned children who live in and around the world's railway stations and it has an important role in the railway industry that is often forgotten”. As a part of team building activities Paul and Darren along with rest of the LNW team have previously raised £10,250 for The Railway Children by organising several events, which included driving from Lands End to John O’Groats in 24 hours.
