PRESTON STATION APPROACH GETS A MAKE OVER

Region & Route:
Network Rail has recently completed a £64,000 project at Preston Station to make life easier for passengers.  Improvements have been made to the road surface, and drop off points for the disabled are now in place to make the station even more user friendly. Other work included the resurfacing of the station approach and footpaths after removing and relaying of existing stone kerbs.  New drainage and gullies have been installed so they are now able to drain water more quickly to avoid flooding.  A waiting shelter was also moved to cater for new road markings and the drop off points. The new disabled facilities were installed after discussions with station operator, Virgin Trains and the local authority.  Network Rail managed the project, which was successfully completed by Serco.  Network Rail building surveyor, Clive Farrington said, “This work has made the station that little bit safer and more pleasant for train passengers to use.  The station is already user friendly for disabled and elderly people but it’s good that we have been able to make it even better.”

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
