PRESTON BROOK HITS THE NAIL ON THE HEAD

Region & Route:
As part of Network Rail’s ongoing commitment to rebuild the railway, the company is investing almost £2 million in the Crewe to Warrington line to stabilise the railway cutting at Preston Brook. Gary Openshaw, General Manager (Preston) said: “This has been a major project for Network Rail and careful planning has ensured that disruption has been kept to a minimum.  The scheme will ensure that passengers can continue to use this busy stretch of track for many years to come.” Work will be concentrated on both sides of a 350-metre section and a soil nailing technique will be used to ensure the embankment is stabilised. In total, approximately 2,000 soil nails will be installed along the railway cutting in the £1.75 million project. The scheme started in January 2005 and work is due to finish at the end of June. The work was identified as being necessary following a 12-month monitoring programme using specialist ground equipment.  All work has been carried out during daytime hours to cause minimal disruption to local residents and no disruption to the operational railway.

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
