PHOTOCALL: LIVERPOOL LIME STREET LIGHTS UP FOR CHRISTMAS

Region & Route:
Date: Thursday, November 30 2006 Time: 18:30 Location: main concourse at Liverpool Lime Street Photographers are invited to photograph the official switch-on of the charity Christmas tree at Liverpool Lime Street station. The tree has been provided by Zöe’s Place, a Liverpool based children’s charity, as part of their ‘Light up a Life’ campaign. A short service will follow the light switch-on, which will include a choir, organised by Network Rail’s Railway Chaplain. Roy Greenhalgh, Liverpool Lime Street station manager, said: “We are extremely proud to be able to support Zöe’s Place and their ‘Light up a Life’ campaign this Christmas.  “The hospice has offered an invaluable service and provided much needed support for hundreds of families across Merseyside since it opened.” The charity is the only hospice in the country to care for babies with multiple special needs. They offer respite and palliative terminal care to babies and their parents from birth. The first hospice opened in Liverpool and now there is a hospice in Middlesbrough and fundraising has begun to open a third hospice in the Midlands. The ‘Light up a Life’ campaign aims to raise money as well as offering a way for the lives of loved ones to be commemorated. In return for a small donation, a light of remembrance is added to the Christmas tree at the hospice. In addition, the charity is displaying a number of Christmas trees in public spaces as a way of increasing their visibility amongst the people of Merseyside.     More information about Zöe’s Place and their ‘Light up a Life’ campaign can be found by logging on to www.zoes-place.org.uk

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
