The project includes: ·         Repair of the existing cast iron columns ·         Repair of the existing wrought iron lattice work ·         Replacement of the existing glazing ·         Painting of iron work in GNER livery colours All work is being carried out at night to avoid disruption to passengers and will be completed in May 2005.  The renewed canopies will help create a lighter and brighter environment for passengers.   The lower canopy renewal follows a £6 million project to renew the main barrel roof and glazing along with work to the portico which was completed in 2002. Dyan Crowther, Route Director, Network Rail said: “A key part of our role is to maintain safety and ensure our stations are fit for purpose.  York is one of a number of stations where Network Rail is carrying out a mix of maintenance and renewal across the route. “Other projects to be carried out in the next two years include repairs to platforms and lighting at Wakefield Westgate and continued works at Darlington to improve the lighting and barrel roof.”
