A Network Rail project to restore a little bit of Nottingham’s railway history has gained recognition from the city’s Civic Society. The £400,000 investment to restore an Edwardian footbridge has won Nottingham Civic Society’s “Mark of the Month” award which recognises projects of architectural and environmental merit. The footbridge, which dates from the 19th Century, sits next to Lincoln Street level crossing at Basford, Nottingham. The bridge was closed on safety grounds in 2005 but reopened last month following a restoration project to return it to its former glory. Gavin Panter, Network Rail Operations Manager said: “Network Rail is committed to delivering a world class railway for passengers in the East Midlands and we are currently investing millions of pounds to renew track and signalling in the region. And, as the owner and operator of the railway infrastructure, we also have the honour of safeguarding Britain’s railway heritage. We’re delighted that people appreciate our efforts to restore this piece of history, bringing it up to the standards expected by 21st century passengers.” Ken Brand, from Nottingham Civic Society added: “We are more than delighted to acknowledge the interest and financial commitment shown by Network Rail in preserving a small but significant piece of Nottingham’s railway history.”

Notes to editors

In June the bridge was transported by contractor May Gurney to the works of Lanarkshire Welding Ltd at Wishaw in Scotland where it was restored and repainted by specialist steel workers. Additional safety features such as anti-vandal mesh to the parapets and non-slip coating to the walking surfaces were added. The bridge reopened at the beginning of August 2006.

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
