Passengers and railway neighbours invited to Wigan train depot information event

Region & Route:
| North West & Central

Residents in Ince-in-Makerfield, Wigan, are invited to an information event to find out more about the construction of a new £46m state of the art depot at Springs Branch sidings.

Network Rail is adapting the existing freight yard at Springs Branch, next to the West Coast main line, creating a brand new facility to stable and maintain 24 electric and eight diesel trains.

The information event will be held on Thursday 24 May at Hope Street Christian Fellowship, 10 Hope St, Ince-in-Makerfield, Wigan from 4pm-7pm.

The upgrade, which is planned for completion in December 2019, is part of the Great North Rail Project - a railway industry team effort to transform train travel for customers across the north. The new train depot will provide more flexibility for Northern to move their trains across the north overnight in preparation for services the next day. It will provide a new home for additional trains brought into use by 2020.

The event is an opportunity for residents to get the latest information and ask the project team any questions.

Anyone who is unable to attend can call Network Rail’s 24 hour national helpline on 03457 11 41 41 for more information.

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
