Overhead power line damage causing delays between Birmingham and Coventry

Region & Route:
| North West & Central

Passengers are being advised to check before they travel as overhead power line damage is causing delays to services between Birmingham and Coventry.

Services have been disrupted since around 6.30am today (5 April) after the overhead lines – which power electric trains – were damaged near Birmingham International station. The incident is affecting services between Birmingham New Street and London Euston via Coventry, Northampton and Milton Keynes.

The cause of the incident isn’t known but Network Rail engineers are on site repairing the damage. There is currently no estimate for when the railway will fully reopen.

A spokesman for Network Rail said: “Our priority at this stage is to quickly and safely repair the damage so the railway can be reopened as soon as possible. Services are running but some have had to be cancelled and some are being diverted. We appreciate this is causing disruption to passengers but can assure them we are doing all we can to fix the issue. We are working closely with the affected train operators and our advice to passengers is to check before they travel and allow extra time to complete their journeys.”

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
