NEW UNDERPASS FOR PEDESTRIANS IN TAMWORTH

Region & Route:

Local people are set to benefit from a new way of crossing the railway line in Tamworth as an underpass is built to replace Alders foot crossing. The scheme is part of Network Rail’s Trent Valley Four Tracking (TV4) project to improve the railway by providing two additional rail tracks between Tamworth and Armitage with Handsacre. Senior Programme Manager for TV4, Keith Riley, explained: “Alders foot crossing is very well-used, particularly by local school children, and its replacement with an underpass is an essential part of our work to improve the railway in Tamworth. We have consulted with local people to ensure this essential work is carried out with minimal disruption in the area. “ Alders foot crossing will close on 7 April. Work to build the new underpass will take approximately three months. A diverted footpath will be signposted during the work. Roman Way, which runs alongside the railway, will also close permanently from this time. Network Rail has consulted with Staffordshire Highways regarding diversionary routes. An information event is being held 4 April at the Castle Hotel, Lady Bank where representatives from Network Rail will be available to tell people more about the TV4 work in the Tamworth area.

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
