New lifts open at Newtown station
- Region & Route:
- Wales & Western: Wales & Borders
New lifts and a footbridge have opened at Newtown station in Powys after work recently was completed.
The new facilities will make both platforms fully accessible for the first time to all passengers using the station.
Network Rail and contractor AmcoGiffen have been working on site since December 2023 and further work will continue in the coming weeks to replace station furnishings as well monitoring and reviewing of the lift to make sure it is functioning properly.
Theo Smith, senior portfolio manager for Network Rail, said: “I’d like to thank members of the public for their patience while we carried out this important piece of work.
“We’re committed to making the railway the preferred choice of sustainable travel, and having stations that are accessible for all rail users is critical to achieving this.
We are continuing to work hard at Abergavenny, Flint and Llanelli stations to also make them step-free, the new facilities will be open to the public soon."
Newtown is one of six stations on the Wales and Borders route becoming step-free. The improvements have been funded by the Department for Transport as part of the UK Government’s Access for All programme, launched in 2006 to address the challenges faced by passengers with disability or mobility issues.
Work continues on new accessible footbridges at Abergavenny, Flint and Llanelli and follows recent completions at Ludlow and Cwmbran stations.

About Network Rail
We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.
Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
