NEW LIFTS FOR STAFFORD STATION

Region & Route:

Work begins Monday (28 February) on creating three new passenger-operated lifts at Stafford station. Network Rail is to carry out a £600,000 refurbishment programme, which will see the existing 40 year-old, staff-operated goods lifts replaced with new lifts, complete with modern controls and energy efficient motors. The new lifts will also provide features for those passengers with a disability. Braille operating instructions, colour contrasted pushbuttons, two-way emergency communication and automatic voice annunciation are some of the new features to be offered. While carrying out the work on the lifts, Network Rail will also open up the bridge area and improve lighting around the lift-car entrances. Until work is completed on 30 May, Network Rail will fund alternative transport arrangements for passengers needing platforms 3-6 who are unable to use the stairs. These passengers should check their travel plans in advance with Virgin Trains JourneyCare on 08457 443366. Where special arrangements need to be made journey times may be extended. Robbie Burns, route director for Network Rail said: “We apologise for any inconvenience but this work is much needed and once complete will bring major benefits for passengers at Stafford station.”

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
