NEW LEASE OF LIFE FOR TONGE VIADUCT

Region & Route:
An historic viaduct in Bolton can remain open following essential repairs to the structure, which were carried out by abseiling workers. The £300,000 scheme on Tonge viaduct has been completed by Network Rail on time and on budget. The structure, which was constructed in 1849, is situated on the Bolton to Blackburn line close to Bolton station. Jo Kaye, Area General Manager said: “Thousands of people rely on the Blackburn to Bolton line to travel to work everyday so it was essential these repairs were carried out to ensure this busy line could remain open.  ”Tonge viaduct is an important landmark in Bolton so it was also vital that it is kept in good repair.” During the work Network Rail replaced all weathered, damaged and missing brickwork on the viaduct to ensure it will remain structurally sound for many years to come and the line can remain open. The scheme has also made the viaduct more aesthetically pleasing to local people. Tonge viaduct is an imposing structure and traditionally undertaking repairs to a bridge this size would have involved the use of extensive scaffolding. During this project a specialist company was appointed which allowed the majority of work to be carried out by abseilers and from suspended cradles. This also meant the work could be completed much more quickly. The scheme was planned in such a way that there was no disruption to normal train services and the majority of work was carried out during the day. Some work required a closure of the line but this carried out at night to cause the minimal amount of inconvenience to passengers.

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
