NEW JOBS FOR YORK AS RAIL RECORDS MOVE TO CLIFTON MOOR

Region & Route:
More than 30 new jobs are being created in York as Network Rail creates a single centre for all of its signalling, civil engineering and title deeds records. Historically the records, which are in both paper and electronic formats, have been stored at 11 sites around the UK. In order to create a more efficient service Network Rail is getting ready to transfer them all to a single site. Nigel Loadman, Corporate Records Manager Network Rail said, "These records are a vital part of engineering background for Network Rail. They include numerous key records that relate to the country’s railway infrastructure and are an important part of the process of modernising and maintaining the UK’s railways. "We take possession of the new site in early March and will carry out a phased move of our records to ensure their continued availability during the move. We hope to be fully staffed with the majority of records in place in the autumn 2008. " Staff at the other sites have been given the option of relocating to York. It is estimated that there will be around 30 vacancies which will be filled on a phased basis during the record relocation process. Denise Stuart, Chief Executive of york-england.com, said: “Network Rail is one of the key players within the Rail Industry and we are delighted to have been able to help them find the right location to house their new facility. Thanks to York’s strategic location in the middle of the UK, the city has always been the centre of the railway industry and I am confident the new facility will provide Network Rail with the optimum vantage point with which to service their clients across the UK,”

Notes to editors

The current sites are at Glasgow, York, Waterloo, Croydon, Swindon, Birmingham and Gillingham. York-england.com is the Inward Investment Agency for York and North Yorkshire.

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
