NEW CUSTOMER SCREENS FOR NORTH WEST RAIL STATIONS
- Region & Route:
New customer information screens will be installed on platforms and in waiting rooms at a host of stations across the North West, thanks to a £6.6 million scheme jointly funded by Network Rail and the Department for Transport. Route Director, Peter Strachan, said: “We are delighted to provide the passengers who use these stations with the latest information technology. Communications systems have changed dramatically since the old style screens were introduced more than 20 years ago. Passengers using these stations are already benefiting from an upgraded West Coast Main Line, and now they have an upgraded information system to match.” Stoke, Runcorn, Warrington Bank Quay and Wigan North Western already boast the new screens, which use the latest display technology. The screens at Runcorn are a completely new facility for the station and as such they have been paid for by the DfT. The others are replacements for worn out equipment, and have been funded by Network Rail . The four stations are the first of 24 on the London North Western route to get the screens, which meet the requirements of the Disability Discrimination Act because they are clearer to read and have large characters. New screens at the other stations will be installed by early 2007.

About Network Rail
We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.
Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
