NEW BOX SIGNALS THE WAY FORWARD

Region & Route:
Passengers travelling in the Knottingley and Ferrybridge areas are set to benefit from a multi million pound resignalling scheme.  Signalling controlling 35 route miles is being renewed to improve performance and reliability of the network. Over the Easter weekend the first phase of the £38 million pound scheme will be commissioned.  To allow the work to take place safely it will be necessary to alter some train services:
  • From Saturday 15 until Monday 16 April (inclusive) a replacement bus service will operate between York and Sheffield
  • From 8pm on Monday 16 April a replacement bus service will operate between Wakefield and Knottingley.  A replacement bus service will also operate between Castleford and Knottingley.
Passengers are advised to contact Northern Customer Relations on 0845 000 0125 Dyan Crowther, Route Director, Network Rail said: “The signalling in the Ferrybridge and Knottingley areas is nearing the end of its useful life.  Renewing the equipment will improve the reliability and performance of the route for passengers and our freight customers.  The new signal box will also provide a more modern working environment for our signallers.” Phase one covers 16 route miles controlled by Ferrybridge signal box.  Over the weekend a new signal box will be commissioned at Ferrybridge, along with:
  • 25 signals
  • 40 track circuits
  • 42 location cases
Phase two includes the signalling currently controlled by Knottingley signal box.  This will be commissioned in August 2006 at which time the operations will be relocated to the new Ferrybridge signal box.

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
