NEW ARRIVAL AT GARSWOOD STATION

Region & Route:
Nine months after work started, new passenger facilities have been delivered for the commuters of Garswood. First North Western staff and passengers are doing extremely well! The £400,000 rebuilding project has provided two new ticket windows, a new waiting area and new toilets – including a unisex toilet for passengers with disabilities. Network Rail estate manager Eoin O’Neil said: [quote]”This is a vast improvement on the facilities that existed before. Although it is a brand new building, it has been constructed in a traditional style and complements the rest of the station.” Network Rail is now turning its attention to the station footbridge and is in talks with Merseytravel and First North Western about replacing the footbridge next spring. The old station building suffered serious structural problems, and station staff had been working in temporary accommodation.  They also have new facilities, including a refreshments area and two new storerooms. The new building boasts artificial stone surrounds on the exterior windows and doors, and sills and lintels with bevelled upper corners.  The entire structure is covered by a pitched roof with blue slate tiles, designed to match the existing waiting room on the opposite platform. [this para for the property trade press only] Serco Rail Property Ltd completed the project, which was funded by Network Rail.

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
