NETWORK RAIL'S GROUND FORCE GETS TO WORK (Handsacre)

Region & Route:

Green fingered volunteers from Network Rail's Trent Valley Four Tracking Project (TV4) joined forces with the British Trust for Conservation Volunteers (BTCV) on 27 June to lend their time and strength to improve Hayes Meadow Primary School's wild area in Handsacre.

School children will benefit from the work carried out by about 20 volunteers improving the school's wildlife area. Plants and flowers have been planted to encourage wildlife while the team put their engineering skills to good use constructing a new pergola and waterfowl nesting raft in the school's pond. Network Rail's Senior Project Manager Keith Riley said: "Our team were happy to give up some of their spare time to improve the area for the school's pupils and help encourage learning about the environment. It's a pleasure to be able to give the school an area that will be enjoyed for years to come."

Notes to editors

Materials have been donated by Network Rail contractor HW Martin who is carrying out the fencing work to the TV4 project. The £350 million TV4 improvement work will remove the bottleneck on the West Coast Main Line between Armitage with Handsacre and Tamworth by doubling the tracks from two to four.

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
