Network Rail to hold level crossing awareness event at Narborough crossing

Region & Route:

Network Rail staff will be joined by representatives from Leicestershire Fire & Rescue Service, Leicestershire Police, British Transport Police and the ward Councillor Kim Richardson for a level crossing awareness event tomorrow, Wednesday 11 December, from 7.30am to 12pm at Narborough level crossing in Leicestershire.

The event is being held to highlight the correct use of level crossings for drivers using Narborough level crossing, which sees regular instances of misuse by motorists and pedestrians alike. There have been 60 cases of misuse over the last five years, six of those taking place this year. Since 2010, twenty of these offences have led to prosecution. The majority of cases involve drivers jumping the red lights, putting themselves, other road users and the railway at risk.

Liz Ready, community safety manager for Network Rail, said: “Narborough crossing is renowned for serious cases of misuse and we hope that by engaging with motorists and pedestrians we will be able to help them use the crossing correctly. We take level crossing safety very seriously and I’d like to thank everyone that has volunteered to come and help at our level crossing awareness event.”

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
