NETWORK RAIL SUPORTS LICHFIELD CITY'S SHERIFF'S RIDE

Region & Route:

Network Rail ensured this weekend’s Sheriff’s Ride passed through its worksite during major construction work safely, so the 450 year old event could continue unabated.

Network Rail has been working closely with Lichfield City Council this year and two years previously to make sure the procession of over 100 horses can keep its traditional route led by the Lichfield Sheriff, Councillor Norma Bacon. The procession was escorted safely through the work site at Lichfield.

Network Rail’s Senior Project Manager, Keith Riley said: “We have been at a critical stage in our work. The West Coast Main Line has been closed for two weeks for extensive engineering work to continue to be carried out to improve the railway locally. The Sheriff’s Ride took place during this period of major work and it’s a privilege to help keep this tradition alive and make sure the procession took place as normal.”

Notes to editors

The West Coast Main Line opened to trains on time at 05.30am Monday 8 September.

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
