Network Rail submits footbridge planning application at Little Bowden

Region & Route:

Network Rail has taken the next step towards building a footbridge at Little Bowden by formally submitted a planning application to Harborough District Council.

Draft plans for the bridge over the railway on the edge of Market Harborough were presented to the public a fortnight ago – an event which saw over 50 members of the public turn up to give their views.

Having taken on board the feedback from the meeting as well as Harborough District Council, Leicestershire County Council and crossing users, the designs have now been submitted for the planning authority to consider.

The level crossing at Little Bowden, which sees around 200 trains pass through at speeds of up to 75 miles per hour, was closed last year.

Gary Walsh, area director for Network Rail in the East Midlands, said: “I’d like to thank all those who took the time to attend our public information event at Market Harborough and for the valuable feedback they gave us.

“While we haven’t been able to make every change that was put to us, we have made a few small adjustments to make it easy for those living near the crossing to access their properties. A lot of work has gone in to this planning application from all parties and I’m pleased that we are now able to take this big step towards getting the bridge in place.”

The planning application can be viewed on the council website.

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
