NETWORK RAIL STOPS THE ROT IN WREXHAM

Region & Route:
Network Rail is to spend £60,000 to eradicate dry rot in the main building at Wrexham General station. Work is expected to start next month and is due to be finished by March next year. Although the station underwent a major restoration by Railtrack, which was marked with an official opening in April 1998, the work failed to stop the rot. Now Network Rail, the organisation that took over when Railtrack was put into administration, has given the go-ahead to its contractor Serco to sort the problem out. It will mean stripping the plaster from affected areas of the building and treating the rot to stop it coming back. Any timber badly affected will be replaced before the walls are plastered again and given a new coat of paint. This will enable the vacant parts of the building to be marketed to make suitable use of the accomodation. A spokesman for Network Rail said: “This demonstrates our commitment to rebuild the railway. The work will mean that the buildings can continue to be used safely and comfortably by passengers and staff alike for years to come.”

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
