NETWORK RAIL SEEKS LOCAL VIEWS ON RAIL IMPROVEMENT PLANS
- Region & Route:
Following an announcement in May of plans to invest more than £40m to build a new rail link in Nuneaton, Network Rail wants to meet residents to hear what they think of the proposals.
A public display will be held next Wednesday, 30 July, between 12:00 and 20:00 in the Hatters Space Community Centre on Upper Abbey Street, Nuneaton. Project managers from the company will be on hand to talk about the plans.
Known as the Nuneaton North Chord, the new line – approximately one mile long – will allow freight to cross from Peterborough to the West Coast Main Line, improving services. The line is planned to go over the old Two Bridges allotment site and then run alongside the West Coast Main Line before joining it near to Caldecote Lane.
Peter Strachan, route director for Network Rail said: “We have been pleased with the response we have had since announcing our intention to build this line. Now, displaying our plans means everyone can have their say and we hope this will help us reach a solution that people in Nuneaton are happy with.”
Anyone who cannot attend on 30 July, or would like to find out more in advance can contact Network Rail via their national helpline on 08457 11 41 41 or by email nuneatonchordconsultation@networkrail.co.uk .
Notes to editors
The Nuneaton North Chord will be funded by the Department for Transport through the Transport Innovation Fund (TIF). The Productivity TIF provides multi-million funding for specific infrastructures which have been identified as national priorities. In all, £80m will be invested in the modification of 30 structures on the Peterborough to Nuneaton line to improve freight movements. This includes the rebuilding of ten bridges and alterations to Stamford station to allow the passage of 9’ 6” high shipping containers.

About Network Rail
We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.
Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
