NETWORK RAIL MANAGER RECEIVES BTP COMMENDATION

Region & Route:
Operations Delivery Manager Andrew Gallagher has been awarded a commendation by the British Transport Police after he stopped teenagers from causing a potential accident. Andrew was off-duty in October 2003 and walking to his home in Cheadle Heath, Manchester, when he spotted two schoolchildren placing objects on the track. He immediately called Network Rail Operations Control to alert them before clearing the line. Andrew then confronted the teenagers and escorted them back to school, where they had absconded from earlier that morning. Area Operations Manager Stuart Middleton said: “Andrew’s actions prevented both a potentially serious train accident and injuries to the children. “It remains a huge concern that children still see the railway as a playground. I am extremely proud of Andrew and was honoured to escort him to receive his commendation.” During a ceremony in Manchester Andrew received the Chief Constables’ commendation from Martin Ripley, British Transport Police Area Commander. Speaking after the award ceremony, Andrew said: “The award has come as a complete surprise and I am greatly honoured to receive it. I’m just glad that I was at the right place at the right time and managed to get the track cleared.”

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
