NETWORK RAIL IS ‘ON THE LEVEL’ IN BURNLEY

Region & Route:
The New Year will mean a new start for the people of Burnley as Network Rail continues to renew one of the main level crossings in the town, making it more reliable for passengers and local users. Network Rail is investing £1.4 million to renew the level crossing on Hufling Lane in Towneley. Preliminary work has already begun on the crossing but the main part of the work will be carried out in January. Gary Openshaw, Area General Manager said: “Investment of this kind is key to providing a reliable rail service for passengers, and this scheme will also have long-term benefits for crossing users.” During the work the barriers will be replaced and the signalling equipment will be renewed. The scheme is being carried out because the level crossing equipment is at least 25 years old and is reaching the end of its working life. This work will ensure the crossing is more reliable. The scheme will require a short road closure while some of the more complex work is carried out. This closure will start on Sunday 21 January and will be in place for a week. A diversionary route will be in place for vehicle users, which is currently being agreed with the local authority. Train services will continue to run as normal during this work and the level crossing will remain open to pedestrians where possible. The project team is working hard to make sure access is retained for local residents during the scheme.

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
