NETWORK RAIL CLEANS UP IN DERWENT VALLEY
- Region & Route:
The stations and track along the picturesque Derwent Valley line between Derby and Matlock are now gleaming thanks to a major clean up operation by Network Rail. Action was taken after consultation with the Friends of the Derwent Valley Line who have presented Network Rail with its 2005 ‘Good Neighbour’ Award in recognition of their efforts. Andrew Hinton, Network Rail Territory Maintenance Director said: “We always strive to be a good neighbour and were delighted to help out in this instance. The Derwent Valley line looks clean and welcoming and we’ll be monitoring the area to make sure it stays that way. The cleanliness of the stations is a tribute to our maintenance team who gave up their weekends to do the job” The seven-man team, based in Derby sprang into action in late October and in one day cleaned the stations, platforms and track at all seven stations along the Derwent Valley Line. Robin Lumb, Stations Secretary of the Friends of the Derwent Valley Line added: “The next litter pick had been planned for March next year, but when the Friends raised, the issue, Network Rail's Derby-based management arranged for the work to be brought forward and it was carried out in October. This has made the Derby-Matlock line and our stations a much more attractive and welcoming travelling environment.” Litter bins have now been provided on all stations which should help avoid future problems with litter on this route.

About Network Rail
We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.
Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
