NETWORK RAIL BUILDS BRIDGES IN ATTENBOROUGH

Region & Route:

Passengers at Attenborough are set to benefit as Network Rail invests £650,000 to replace the station’s footbridge.

Tom Birch, Network Rail’s Area General Manager for the East Midlands said: “As the owner and operator of the railway infrastructure, Network Rail is responsible for the maintenance of thousands of bridges across the country. The footbridge at Attenborough has come to the end of its natural life and risks closure unless we replace it. The project will involve some disruption for residents and the travelling public, but we will work to keep this to a minimum and ensure people are kept well informed.” To allow the project to be completed, a lot of the work will take place at weekends when train services are not scheduled to run. There will be several road closures of Attenborough Lane on Sunday mornings and diversionary routes for motorists and pedestrians will be provided. Network Rail will also be constructing a temporary footbridge to ensure passengers can access the station throughout the project. Network Rail has consulted local authorities and has written to residents in Attenborough to explain what work will be taking place. The project team is also holding a drop in information centre at Attenborough Village Hall to answer any questions residents may have about the project: Wednesday 17 January 2007 between 4pm and 7.15pm The project will start on the 21 January and is scheduled to be completed by early April.

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
