NECHELLS PARK ROAD BRIDGE SET FOR STRENTHENING WORK

Region & Route:

Network Rail in partnership with Birmingham City Council is strengthening Nechells Park Road railway bridge in Birmingham to bring it in line with the latest European standards. The £1 million project is set to be complete by the end of September. The bridge which carries Nechells Park Road over the railway will be closed throughout the project. The strengthening work will allow the bridge to carry commercial road vehicles now permitted on Britain's roads under recent EU legislation. Chris Rowley, Network Rail Area General Manager said: "This project is part of a massive upgrading programme which is being conducted on hundreds of bridges across the UK. The work will ensure that this important route can remain open for many years to come." Neil Dancer, Birmingham City Council's Chief Highway Engineer, added: "Drivers are advised that the closures will be in place from Monday 9th July to Sunday 30th September when the project is due to be completed. Local residents have been informed and diversionary routes will be well signed for motorists. Pedestrian access will be maintained across the bridge at all times."

Notes to editors

During the closure of Nechells Park Road vehicular access to St Clements Road will be via Nechells Place.

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
