MORE INFORMATION AVAILABLE ON KEY PROJECTS

Region & Route:
People in Cumbria now have access to more information on two key projects being carried out in the area next year – the replacement of Leven viaduct and the removal of the level crossing at Bailey Lane in Grange-over-Sands – thanks to new information boards in Grange-over-sands and Ulverston. A display on both projects has been set up in the Tourist Information Centre, Main Street, Grange-over-Sands and there is one on Leven viaduct in Ulverston Library, Kings Road, Ulverston. Gary Openshaw, Network Rail’s General Manager (Preston), said: “Communication with local people is very important when we are carrying out significant projects like Leven viaduct and Bailey Lane.  We understand people will have concerns about how these projects will affect them, and we want to offer them a flavour of the work that’s being done.” Network Rail has already held discussions with local MPs, local councillors and representatives from groups the projects will affect. The company is also planning two open days early next year when residents will have an opportunity to come and view the project plans, raise concerns and ask questions. The first will take place in the Supper Room, Coronation Hall, County Square, Ulverston on Thursday, January 26 2006 from 12 noon to 7pm. This will be an opportunity for local people to discuss the Leven viaduct project. There will also be an Open Day in the Main Hall at Victoria Hall, Main Street, Grange-over-Sands on Wednesday, February 1 2006 from 12 noon to 7pm. This will be an opportunity for residents to discuss the Leven viaduct project and the replacement of the level crossing at Bailey Lane. A representative from Trans Pennine Express will also be available at each event to answer questions about rail replacement services during the work.

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
