Region & Route:
Date:                           25 and 26 August 2005 Time:                          11am onwards Location:                    The Dolphin Centre, Darlington, DL1 5RP Media contact:          Carolyn Watson, 01904 522825 Journalists and photographers are invited to attend the opening of a summer safety event to raise awareness about the dangers of railway crime. No Messin’! Live, a two-day free activity extravaganza for young people aged between 10 and 16, will take place at the Dolphin Centre from 10am to 4pm on 25 and 26 August. The event is part of Network Rail’s No Messin’! campaign, which aims to show young people alternatives to messing about on the railway. Dyan Crowther, Route Director, Network Rail said: “All children want to have fun, especially during the school holidays.  But, we have a real problem in the Darlington area with children risking their own lives and those of others by trespassing on the railways, placing objects on the track and even throwing missiles at trains.  Darlington was the number one location for acts of vandalism on the railway in 2004. “No Messin’! Live showcases fun activities and sports children can try out during the summer holidays.  We hope that they will enjoy the event and be inspired to either take up a new activity, or develop an existing skills or talent and stay away from the railway tracks.” During the two-day event, children will have the opportunity to try out a range of activities including: wrestling, dj-ing workshops, climbing and team challenges. If you want to attend the event on either day please contact Carolyn Watson on 01904 522825.

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
