MEDIA INVITATION: LIVERPOOL SOUTH PARKWAY

Region & Route:
Date:                           Thursday, 31 March 2005 Time:                          3.00 pm Location:                    Liverpool South Parkway construction site, Allerton, Merseyside Event:                         Project update and media briefing Media contact:          Keith Lumley 0161 228 8582 or 07798 858776       Liverpool South Parkway is the brand new £17 million transport interchange linking buses, trains, taxis, bicycles and cars, and providing a direct bus link to John Lennon International Airport, funded by Merseytravel. The interchange combines the existing Allerton Interchange station with a relocated Garston station and is being constructed in the ‘V’ where the west coast main line crosses over the Merseyrail Northern Line at Allerton. The Parkway construction is in two distinctly separate but inextricably linked projects: the railway element, which is being project managed by Network Rail and costing approximately £10 million, and the Parkway buildings, which will house facilities such as ticket office, waiting rooms, and retail outlets. The rail element enters a crucial final stage when a 1,000 tonnes crane will lift a 23 metre steel beam into position across the Merseyrail lines. The lift will take place in the early hours of Sunday 3 April, the crane having been previously constructed on site. You are invited to attend a briefing on the rail element of the project, to view a selection of ‘progress’ photographs, to be escorted round the construction site and to photograph the crane in situ prior to the lift on the Sunday morning. (It is not practical to attend at the time of the lift. Network Rail will supply photographs of the beam being lifted into position). Reporters/photographers should report to the site office reception on Woolton Road, Allerton, which is literally round the corner from Allerton station.

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
