MEDIA INVITATION: LEVEN VIADUCT

Region & Route:
Date:                           Thursday, 26 January 2006             Time:                          11am             Location:                    The Supper Room, Coronation Hall, County Square, Ulverston             Event:                         Project update             Media contact:          Hannah Cruickshank on 0161 288 8867 or 07717 877353 Essential maintenance work begins on a £14 million project to repair the Leven viaduct in March. Network Rail has already held extensive consultation with stakeholders in the area and is offering journalists the chance to view plans for the scheme and ask questions. The project will be the largest Rail Civil Engineering bridge scheme conducted over the next five years in the London North Western Territory. Unfortunately due to the aggressive environment, routine maintenance has failed to prevent the structure deteriorating to the point where major work is required. During the scheme, the entire deck will have to be removed and replaced. Due to the large scale of the work it was not deemed possible to keep one line open while the other line was worked on. A full closure of the line will therefore take place from 26 March until 16 July and a rail replacement service will be in operation. Passengers should contact National Rail enquiries on 08457 484950 when planning their journeys.

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
