MEDIA INVITATION: £3 MILLION RENEWAL OF WOLDS COAST RAILWAY LINE

Region & Route:
Date:                           26 November 2004 Time:                          10.30 am Location:                    Driffield Station Event:                         How do you renew a railway?  Join Network Rail engineers to find out. Media contact:          Carolyn Watson, 01904 522825        On Monday 20 November Network Rail begins a £3 million renewal of five miles of track between Driffield and Beverley on the Wolds Coast railway line.  With some parts of the infrastructure dating back to the 1930’s the existing track is nearing the end of it’s useful life. Engineers have imposed a 50mph speed restriction to ensure the continued safe use of the route.  The restriction has meant trains have been delayed for up to eight minutes per journey.  Engineers will be working around the clock to renew the track during a nine-day blockade with train services resuming on Monday 29 November.  Once the work is complete and the new track has bedded in the linespeed of 70mph will be reinstated ensuring quicker and more reliable journey times. You are invited to join engineers on track to see at first hand how this mammoth task will be undertaken and the specialist engineering skills involved.  Please contact Carolyn Watson on the above number to confirm your attendance.

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
