Manchester Piccadilly station makes its mark with new social distancing guides

Region & Route:
North West & Central

Passengers making essential journeys at Manchester Piccadilly station will be able to keep a safe distance from each other during the coronavirus crisis, thanks to new measures in place this week.

The station team has installed vinyl stickers on the floor around the station to highlight the two metre distance people should keep between themselves and others.

The stickers form a grid leading towards the ticket barriers, as well as marking out spaces for passengers to wait in whilst queuing for tickets or information.

Scott Green, station manager at Manchester Piccadilly, said: “The new stickers will make it really easy for passengers to protect themselves when using the station for essential travel.

“Each sticker has been measured to be two metres apart from the next, in line with government advice. Now passengers don’t have to guess, they can be sure.”

These extra guides have been put in place alongside increased regular cleaning at the station to ensure the highest levels of hygiene for passengers and railway workers.

Earlier this week, Manchester Piccadilly announced free parking for all NHS staff and care workers during the coronavirus crisis.

Passengers are once again reminded to only travel if absolutely necessary.

A reduced timetable is in operation and people who must travel are advised to visit www.nationalrail.co.uk every day to check the new train times.

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
