LIVERPOOL LIME STREET GOES ARTISTIC

Region & Route:
As part of the European Capital of Culture programme of events, BBC Liverpool has createed a lasting marker of the year of ‘Faith in One City 2004’ by helping members of the public to create digital self-portraits. The project, which is supported by Network Rail, the Liverpool Culture Company and Roots, was launched at Lime Street station this week. Station Manager Roy Greenhalgh said: “We are delighted to support and host this special event in Liverpool. “The city has a long and established reputation for the arts.  We, as the rail network operator, are proud of our role in bringing people to the city of Liverpool, helping them to enjoy this project, which we are sure will be unique and full of the good humour associated with Liverpool.” Working on either the BBC Bus or in the Open Learning Centre at BBC Radio Merseyside, participants got a helping hand from professional digital artist, Dorrie Halliday and BBC staff to create their art, which is now being exhibited at the Lime Street entrance of the station. Mr Greenhalgh added: “We would like to invite and welcome any visitors to the station to view the exhibition, we are sure they will brighten the day for everyone using the station.”

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
