Leader of Royal Borough visits Crossrail Project

Simon Dudley, leader of Royal Borough of Windsor & Maidenhead, took time out of his day to find out how Crossrail work is progressing in the royal borough.

Simon Dudley, leader of Royal Borough of Windsor & Maidenhead, took time out of his day to find out how Crossrail work is progressing in the royal borough.

Cllr Dudley pulled on the required Personal Protective Equipment and was given a tour around the new sidings location where five Elizabeth line and Great Western Railway trains will park, and around Maidenhead Station where Network Rail will be carrying out major track work this Christmas.

With three quarters of the Elizabeth line’s route running above ground through outer London, Berkshire and Essex on three of the busiest commuter routes into the capital, this work will bring journey time savings to Maidenhead to stations such as Canary Wharf and Bond Street which will be as short as 55 minutes and 41 minute respectively.

Cllr Simon Dudley, leader of the Royal Borough of Windsor & Maidenhead, said: “It was interesting to see first hand the work being done to link the Elizabeth line through the borough and to talk with staff about how it fits in with the wider regeneration of Maidenhead into a town for everyone.

“Construction is already well underway and the Crossrail project will expand our existing transport links making this an even more attractive place to live and work.”

Babak Erfani, Network Rail Project Manager, said “We have been working day and night in Maidenhead so that Elizabeth line services can commence in 2019.

“It was a fantastic opportunity to show Cllr Dudley our progress and explain the significant works we have planned over the next year”.

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
