KIRKGATE PHASE ONE COMPLETE

Region & Route:

Passengers using Wakefield Kirkgate station have improved facilities after work was completed this week.

Working together Northern Rail, Network Rail and Metro secured improvements to the CCTV system and subway as well as improvements to signage, a new help point and refurbished entrance lobby. The car park was also resurfaced, allowing the free bus to call at the station.

Steve Butcher, area director, Northern Rail, said:  “We are committed to delivering improvements to provide our customers with a safe and comfortable environment.  We’ll continue to work with Network Rail and Metro to develop plans to deliver further improvements at Wakefield Kirkgate.”

Warrick Dent, area general manager for Network Rail, added: “It is really pleasing to see these improvements at Kirkgate.  We still have more to come with work on the canopies, subway roof and spine wall planned for next year, all helping to make the station a better environment for passengers.  We will also continue to work to see if it is possible to get tenants for the station buildings.”

"This is just the first stage in the plan to overhaul Wakefield Kirkgate station," said Metro Chairman, Cllr Ryk Downes. "Metro and its partners continue to work together and with a wide range of organisations to deliver the long term masterplan for the station."

Notes to editors

The work at Kirkgate was mainly funded through the National Stations Improvement Programme, a joint rail industry initiative funded primarily by the Department for Transport.  The five year programme aims to deliver a minimum of £150m worth of station improvements, to a minimum of 150 medium sized stations in England and Wales (excluding Network Rail managed stations).

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
