KEEPING THE RAILWAY CLEAR ALONG THE SNOW HILL LINE

Region & Route:

To ensure the safety of the railway for train services and employees, Network Rail will this week embark on a programme of trimming trees, branches and undergrowth alongside the railway between Birmingham Moor Street and Leamington Spa. Overhanging branches and undergrowth within 6 metres of the railway will be carefully removed to ensure train drivers are able to have a clear view of the signals. Chris Rowley, Network Rail Area General Manager for the West Midlands explained: “Trees and undergrowth alongside the railway needs careful management to allow trains to run safely. As well as the risk of branches falling onto the tracks, unmanaged vegetation can prevent train drivers seeing signals and put our track workers at risk. Network Rail take’s its environmental responsibilities seriously and we will only remove the minimum amount of vegetation required to ensure the safe running of trains along this busy route.” The work is part of Network Rail’s £75 million programme to improve the railway along the Snow Hill line by renewing the signalling and improving parts of the track. The project will be completed early next year when the railway between Birmingham and Leamington Spa will close between 9–18 February 2008 and engineers test and switch on the new signalling equipment. Network Rail will work with train operators to ensure passengers are informed of alternative travel arrangements.

Notes to editors

The vegetation management will start this week. Most of the work will take place during the day and Network Rail will contact residents living next to the railway where extensive works are taking place If residents do have any questions about the work they can contact the Network Rail National Helpline on 08457 11 41 41

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
